Easy Dog Harness

I made these for my shih tzus. It is the type of harness that they just put there feet through & the hook is on top of there back. This is my first time writing a pattern that I have made. The one on my White shih tzu Angel is the first one that I made that is a bit larger. This pattern is written on the smaller harness that is on my Multi colored shih tzu Babe that fits better. I think I will be making another one for Angel so it will fit her better too:)

  3. This is a great pattern. I have Boston terriers and getting any harness to fit right around their barrel chests is nearly impossible. Thanks!

  8. Could you use this for a cat?

    ReplyDelete
  9. I would think it would work for a cat as well. You may need to adjust the body length but that wouldn't be hard to do or you could just use a smaller hook size & a different yarn weight to achieve a smaller size:)

  12. I have a Shitzu and a Maltese and 4 4yr old Malshi's (thats Maltese Shitzu) I make dog sweaters and I tried making a harness but I really like this pattern so much better. They love it when I make something for them and they all crowded round while 3 of them tried to get their feet in it. Each dog knows , if I try it on them then it belongs to that dog and if it doesnt fit then I have to just adjust it because they each KNOW that it is special for that particular dog. This little family is just so funny. This is Soo much more fun and cheaper than buying 6 harnesses. 10Q

  13. Thank you for posting this!:) I have Shitzu and Maltese and this is so much cheaper than buying $25 step in Harness's at the store. And Much more fun. The dogs just love it when I make stuff for them. The rule is 1st one to try it on gets it. Three of them tried to get in to this one. Now I get to make 5 more! 10Q

  15. Thank you! This is so much better than spending $25-50 on s harness for Leo. He is a long haired miniature dachshund and a puller. I love that he uses a harness.

  16. Hi my name is Gloria, I'm just wondering if the harness could be made with 100% cotton yarn. Would it make it stronger. Reg worsted yarn seems to stretch too easily. ty

  17. 100% cotton yarn. I can't see why it wouldn't work. If it is less stretchy that would be all the better. The only reason I used the yarn I did is because that is what I had when I thought about making the pattern. All I can say is give it a try & let us know how it turned out:)

  18. On row 27 it says to sc dec. What does the dec stand for?

    ReplyDelete
  19. That means a single crochet decrease. Witch means to single crochet 2 together:)

  20. I really enjoy this pattern! I have a question. On row 25, it says to pick up 4 sc on 1st strap and continue to next strap picking up 4 sc. (8sc)Could you please explain this?

    ReplyDelete
  21. an idea for you all... someone asked if you can make this with cotton... I had made a couple with cotton and they were nice and strong much better than yarn. experiment with different yarns, size needles and/or less or more stitches to find the right size for your dog and the ones that don't fit are not wasted. Give them to your local humane society they will love the donations. I for one thank you for creating this pattern and posting it for free on the internet. It is also a great way to use up left over yarns. double up the yarns and make it bigger and stronger. Love it!

  24. I have a shih tzu. The harness I bought is about a year old and I notices its starting to cut into her under arms area. So this pattern will be a great replacement for her. Thank you so much.

  25. Hi. I was gonna ask the same question about "pick up 4 st and continue to the next strap"... I enlarged the picture like 300% -- are you saying to pick up the END stitches of the rows???? That's what I'm seeing and seems like it would work . . . Let me know if this isn't what you mean . . . LOL
Thanks so much. I want to make 1,000 of these cuz they're so cute.

  26. cant wait to finish this harness for my maltese. I am stumped with the directions. About row 22-- where are the 22 sts.???? Also row 25-- what do you mean by PICK UP 4sc.?? and how do you cont. to next strap to pick up 4 sc.??? TY.

  27. Thank you so much for the inspiration! I don't follow patterns but your pictures were a great starting point. I made a couple for my mini Schnauzer but added a side release buckle to the back and tatted a couple of loops that I attach the leash to. I also adorned it with a crocheted rose in a contrasting color. So stinking cute! I was just looking at harnesses yesterday at PetSmart and refused to pay $25. I was so happy when I came home and saw yours! Thanks again!

  30. I was trying to crochet this for my Shi-poo puppy and got confused with the instructions. What is the difference in Row 3 Sl st in next 18 and Row 1 sc? I am not seeing a difference.

  31. I love this harness but even cotton yarn stretches after its made and has to be adjusted. I would love to find a yarn or twine that doesn't stretch and isn't bulky. Anyone have suggestions?
    Thanks for the pattern!

  32. I had the same problem and found #18 nylon cord in the yarn section at Hobby Lobby. It's a little stiff but thin enough for my little Yorkie. I also made one side with a small circle ring so it slides thru a D-ring on the other side and is self adjusting when you only hook the smaller one. I got 175 yards of it for under $7 so I can make another one and some for his doggie friends :)

  44. I just made this for my son and d-i-l's miniature dachshund. I'm not great at following patterns, so where I got confused I guessed, lol. It turned out well and I trimmed it in a contrasting color to add some pizzazz. The only modification I made was to widen the center strip from 4 to 8 stitches, this way it dug in him less since he doesn't have any padding or much fur :oP

  45. Thank you so much. Exactly what I need for the cat.
